Dear Terry, Frankly, it has more to do with symbolism than to find a gourd that is opened or closed. If it is placed in a toilet environment i.e. lots of moisture, then, ideally the material in which it is made of should be able to "withstand" such an enviroment. Whether it has an open "mouth" or closed one should not be a major issue, here.
