This is because, usually, when we approach a home, we look at the layout plan or of the interior of the home; the location of toilets, openings e.g. side openings etc.. to see if the wealth leak can be minimised. This popularity is based on the belief as what you had mentioned; that a mirror used in the hope that it can reflect `double' the luck. 2. We can (on a less scientific level) base it on feelings.
