I believe sometime back as far back as 1999 or earlier, there was this example of underground water (or sewerage pipe) running under a house. And so happens that this German study, mentioned that there was a high incidence of cancer where beds were placed either above this pipe or close to it. Perhaps, maybe the pipes had corroded or etc... We do not know. Where possible, as you had mentioned, try to place your furniture especially sitting position as far away from the pipes. Since (OFTEN) locations that we can place a water position even under Flying Star Feng Shui have to meet the criteria that there is sufficient clear-space to allow for a water position. So this is appropriate to create an element balance between all ths stars since 2 (Earth), 7 (Metal), toilet (water flow), 4 wood, plus fire gives you a perfect five element flow:- Earth -> Metal -> Water -> Wood -> Fire -> Earth. Dear Karen, This has more to with commonsense than feng shui. For example, here one would certainly wish that they stay in a concrete reinforce-cement home. This is because when the washing machine spins it does shake. If one house is made of wooden planks or thin gypsum wooden walls, then sometimes the washing machine may vibrate and this vibration can be felt at the opposite wall plus the noise can be heard. So the only solution is try to place the washing machine too close to the wall. Not much else you can do unless there is space elsewhere that you can relocate your washing machine. Hope that helps.
