Dear Anon, Frankly, for such a situation, there is no effective cure for it. The only possibility (but in your case cannot be done) is to have a flat ceiling. However, based on your description: to me it seems ok since: 1. the stairs do not face the main entrance. 2. in Feng Shui, a straight staircase is not that good. But it looks like you mentioned that there are some turns or landing. If so, this is favourable under Feng Shui. To me, your staircase, therefore, don't seem to be a major issue under Feng Shui. Dear Anon, 1. Yes, this is a `strong' Chinese belief. 2. It is said that when one is pregnant, one should not move house or even change the bed position or any other furniture in the room. It is said that the consequence is to suffer a `miscarriage'. 3. I believe, in the past, there was no electricity and it could be (I am only guessing) that if one changes the position of furniture, and unwittingly, the wife (who is pregnant) may `accidentally ' bump into them or trip over them. Dear Anon, Thank you for the illustration. The second door you mentioned in the illustration seems to be a passage way rather than a door. As the doors are on the side, I cannot see any other doors directly facing your "always" opened office room door. Thus from a shapes and forms point of view, it is perfectly acceptable to have this type of arrangement. Furthermore, your office table is away from this passage way which is good and that you had mentioned that this is an excellent facing direction for you.
