Dear Anon, Usually, the "sunken" part or the lower level can be the living room. Quite often, many houses have `split-levels where there are steps leading up to the dining room. Displaying it a the staircase, I feel is better than facing the living room. Just make sure that it is not facing directly the steps. It can be at the "outlines" i.e. side of the staircase. For mansionettes, it can be at the passageway usually between the staircase and the kitchen ....
