In a Ba zi that has 6 pillars: Year, MM, DD, HH, House of Life & Conception; There are 6 Heavenly stems and 6 Earthly branches that interact with each other e.g. resulting in triple combinations etc...

One advice is that what you mentioned is based on a broad overall 10 year luck period. What one should instead look at that year. For example in 2012, one can look up the luck period for say the 1st 6th months and the last six months. See attachment.
