Dear Linda,
In my opinion, there is a very wide interpretation using numerology.
There are various ways of looking at the numbers and `formulas'.
Especially for the Cantonese (a dialect group of the Chinese) - especially from Hong Kong. (Origin - Canton). To the Cantonese, `four' means `say' or die.
But from my personal experience, I have analysised houses and even is aware of quite alot of people with 444 etcs...
For example, house numbers like #14-44 or even phone numbers like 244-4444. I found that these people are no less lucky then any other persons.
If I were you, basing `luck' on just house number is incomplete. So long as one's house has good shapes and forms etc... I believe such factors are more important.
Therefore, in my opinion, I would rather, not worry too much of your existing house number nor need to change it.
Warmest Regards,

Dear Cecil,
My new address is 4414 E.
Night Owl Lane. My husbands
birthdate is 12-20-1952 who is
the breadwinner and mine is
11-17-1957. I have determined
the front door to be 210 and
the other door to be used from
garage is 120. The master
bedroom is north west and the
dining, living and kitchen
room are on
the west. This house faces
south and the back is north
with mountains behind. My
concern is the number four.
There are 3 fours in this
address and if you add up the
numbers you have 13 then
reduce to 4. All information I
have read says 4 is a death
number and unlucky, but when
we bought the lot it was 125
or if you add those numbers it
is a 8 which is a good number.
What
are your thoughts? Thank you
for your time and advise.

Dear Anon,
It is not necessarily bad to have the bed located at NE compass direction of the home.
The following factors could be considered:
1. Under the Eight House Theory, if this is an auspicious sector for you.
2. A more advanced method is to check the sector of influence at the NE using Flying Star Feng Shui. Especially to confirm how Yin is the NE sector? If the sector is TOO YIN, then, it is best to neutralise this or increase it with more Yang. But, again this has to be analysed before, one can tell for sure.
Based on `feel', if you can sleep properly and there are no other issues affecting the person, then it is still acceptable.

CecilQuoteOn 7/23/2001 3:29:00 PM, Anonymous wrote:

Dear Sudarshan,
Based on a survey conducted, on this site, some of us seemed to be bothered by a mirror facing the bed. Whereas for some others, this is no issue.
Firstly, you could check whether the mirror faces any part of the bed (not just the bedroom). If it does face the bed, do you feel restless or do not sleep well?
If your answer is yes, then, it is best to try and cover the mirror. If so far, you are not affected by having the mirror face the bed.. ie. you can sleep peacefully, then, you should not be affected by it.
There are several ways to `cover' the mirror:
1. A more costly approach is to change the door to a non-mirror door or
2. Buy those off the self opaque film for windows and paste it on to the whole mirror. There are either Do-it-yourself or get a contractor to install it for a fee.
3. Use posters or even gift wrappers and stick it on with scotch-tape it.

Dear Evelyn,
It is best to look at the overall `Shapes and Form' of the room and the placement of your table and chair.
Here, it is best to position the table and chair so that one can immediately see who is coming into the room (room door).
Since, you have a half-height wall (for support), this is less of a `problem'.
In my opinion, the placement that you have currently is quite acceptable. If you can, you could try to have the blinds or curtains. But this is not a real issue unless, there are poison arrow(s) aimed into the house thru this window.

Dear Eric,
In my opinion, the Ba Gua symbol has been used on Toaist priest's clothings. Sometimes you find it on the front of their clothings and on occassions, it is on the back of their clothings.
One may consider just tatooing the Yin-Yang symbol only i.e. which is found at the centre of the Ba Gua.

Dear Sudarshan,
Usually, the belief is that the flow of Qi should be `slowed' down in a horizontal passage.
Depending on the width of the passage-way, potted plants could be placed on either side of the passage. The size of plants / pots depends on the passage way.
If the passage way is too narrow, then, small potted plants can be used. The pots can be alternate to each other and the number of potted plants depends on the length of the passage-way.

Dear Anon,
1. It is interesting to find out the survey results on the following question:-
2. Are you comfortable sleeping facing a TV set (mirror)? A short simple 3 questions survey.
3. The results of the above survey can be found under this URL:-
http://www.geomancy.net/polls/
(The third last question on the above polls menu).
4. From what you had mentioned, this need not necessary be considered as `poison arrows'.
Some of us may be `immune' to or are not affected by the `reflection'. While others may be affected by it.
5. Perhaps, you may like to ask yourself the following question:-
"Am I able to sleep comfortably with it there (the closet mirror)?"
If you either feel uncomfortable or would like to avoid having it there, then there are `self remedies' such as:
`covering' the mirror with an opaque film or place posters or just scotch tape it with plain paper. (Using scotch tape is usually a temporary solution).

Dear Maria,
The distinction here is what tool is used to take the compass reading of the front/main entrance door?
Here, in my opinion, usually the confusion arised because of the instruction(s) given by various parties.
A. If one is using an ORDINARY compass, then use this method:
http://www.geomancy.net/fs/cecilcompass.htm
One will normally not go wrong using the above method.
B. But if one is using a Chinese LUOPAN, then, measurement can be different. Here, it is not uncommon to find out the facing and sitting direction.
Thus, one has to be absolutely CLEAR which TOOL is being used.
For the flow of Qi, on `paper' since the main entrance has been considered as the MOUTH of the house, then this is a crucial area of Qi coming into the home.
On other areas of Feng Shui, one could also look at the frontage or the location where most light enters the home. - Here, it is still best to take the compass reading from the centrepoint to the main entrance.

CecilQuoteOn 7/17/2001 5:14:42 PM, Anonymous wrote:

In many of the pictures you will see that the flags are placed according to North, South, East and West.
You can also see the romanised character of each of the Mandarin word for:
North - Bei (or a good example is Beijing, the capital of China. Where `Bei' refers to North and thus one can now understand that Beijing is located in the `north'.
South - is known as `nan'.
East - as `dong'
West - is `xi'.
Apologies if the graphics is between 110k to 170k each. This is because, the finer details can be view extremely clear. Rather than less clear.

Dear Shirlee,
1. It depends.
2. If you have picture(s), I can take a look at it as the `fortune' or wealth can be affected adversely at such locations. For example, it can either be inauspicious or auspicious.
3. It is always best that you look at the commercial viablility mainly:-
3.1 History of previous business.
Try to find out, the type of business and if you are going in on with the same business.
Why did the previous owner give up? (if it is an existing location). How is business at the locality.
3.2 If you have the time, try to monitor the traffic and business (depending on the week of the day i.e. sample of business on a Monday-Friday? And Sat - Sun if you intend to open the shop.
3.3 The frontage of the shop is equally important.
Since, not all cases are identical, try to find out more...
Like I mentioned earlier, it can be a two edged sword... some sites can be very auspicious while others... a `disaster' for business.

Dear Rosie,
Apologies for the late reply.
If you have determined using Flying Star and found that this is a misfortune area, usually this #5 should be looked at in conjuction with the other two Flying Star numbers of that sector.
For example, mountain #5, water star #2, base star #3 - under Flying Star, and using the Five Elements concept, this sector is out of balance.
You can use metal cures to neutralise the imbalance caused at this sector.

CecilQuoteOn 6/13/2001 9:04:00 AM, Anonymous wrote:

Dear Md Haque,
To take a compass reading, one should take the compass degree of the main door.
The definition of the main door is the door where, you enter the living room area. Usually, this door has the door number on it.
For reference:-

Dear Anon,
1. Can you confirm whether there are any `poison arrows' threatening your main entrance door.
2. I would normally not recommend using a Ba Gua without a proper reason for doing so.
3. Usually, it is common for the Ba Gua to be hung for the following reasons:-
3.1 To help ward off `sha qi' or poison arrows aimed at the main entrance.
Best to stand at the main entrance looking out of the house.
Look out for poison arrow(s) in the form of a pointed roof of a neighbour's home aimed at the main door or a lone lamp post which seemed to be `slicing' the main entrance or any windows of the room.
3.2 In the `East' it is usually used in conjuction with:-
- Charms written on yellow paper to ward off evil.
- Or a Ba Gua mirror with the two door gods attached to the picture.
The sample picture of Ba Gua mirror with door gods is shown under the following URL:

Dear John,
1. Thanks for sharing with us the information.
I have short write-up which I written quite sometime back on this. The URL is at:
http://www.geomancy.net/fs/pakua.htm
Please see below (my comments):-QuoteOn 7/15/2001 12:03:00 PM, Anonymous wrote:
Please kindly verify this (got
it from another website):
In my opinion, it is best not to `verify' what was written at another site but rather; I feel that it would be better to bring out two differing camps - the `issues' relating to this subject.
And that, in my opinion there are no right or wrong answers. Ultimately, each of us, should form our own opinion.
Yes, there are two opposing views:
1. One view is that it can be used to either ward off evil or used against `Sha Qi' or poison arrows.
Within this camp, some FS practitioners may agree with using it to ward off evil and/or `Sha Qi'.
While some FS practitioners may only agree with either it being used to ward off evil or used only against `Sha Qi'.
2. Some FS practitioners may feel that using Ba Gua mirror is simply " Bull-shit ".QuoteThere's alot of supersition
surrounding the bagua symbol.
Even the average Chinese
person assumes that its a
"mirror" to reflect back evil.
It doesn't really reflect back
"anything".
If I read the words correctly, the central argument is that it "does not reflect back anything i.e. reflect back evil".
Yes, in my opinion, I also feel that it does not reflect back evil.
The main situation why some FS practitioners may perhaps be improperly quoted is that they feel that the Ba Gua mirror should not be placed inside the home.
The reason is that the "First Heaven Sequence" mirror (reference: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/pakua.htm ) can be considered to be kinda of - "too Yang" to be placed inside a normal home. (For example, it is acceptable to be placed inside a temple, this is acceptable.) As a temple is considered a depository of people's sorrow/problems etc...
The above is one view-point. Because, of the suggestion that it should not be placed in side the home, some FS practitioners may perhaps, conclude that these " FS practitioners" may have wrongly interpreted as it being bad as it can `bounce back evil'.
The Ba Gua mirror, is not an evil thing and how come, it can `bounce back evil'? Perhaps, there is some misunderstanding of it here.QuoteThe bagua you see on these
mirrors is the Fu Xi Bagua,
which is the first bagua (the
bagua changes like the
I-Ching). It is the bagua of
Death, of the Invisible World,
before the world manifested
into the mundane. Its purpose
is to take negative chi and
put into its perfect state,
which is, in Taoism,
nothingness.
If you look at the Fu Xi Bagua
you will see the chyan trigram
at the top and the kun trigram
at the bottom. Jen trigram is
in the bottom left and gen
trigram is the bottom right,
etc. The lines of all opposite
trigrams add up to 9, which
means completion. All trigrams
are complimentary opposites
symbolically.
This Fu Xi Bagua or also known as the First Heaven sequence has trigram arrangement that `picture perfect' in that the opposite trigram shows a relationship to each other. So you have: Heaven to Earth; Wind to Thunder; Water to Fire; Mountain to Lake.QuoteIf you wish to turn an
external shar chi into
"nothingness" you may turn it
upside down so that chyan is
at the bottom. Chyan, which
often symbolizes a sword will
fight back the shar chi. You
place it inside the house BUT
the mirror is turned around
against the wall as though its
power is going thru the wall
out to the external shar chi.
That way you dont see the
bagua inside your house.
Because, we all know, one
shouldnt never see a bagua
inside a house.
Frankly, there are many interpretations on the use of the Ba Gua and above is one of them.
In the `East' it is common to find religious practitioners `apply' the Ba Gua trigram or even simple mirrors to the homes of their followers.
Toaist priests have often gone to homes to `bless them'. You can see mirrors and yellow charms pasted above the doors. (Do note that these charms are used to `ward-off evil or bad luck'.
As the Ba Gua trigrams are an intergral part in Toaism, the use of it can be diverse.
If one is interested in finding out more about the trigrams, one can get hold of books on I-Ching. There are quite a number of these books nowadays.
Books interpreted from the original I-Ching book especially by James Legge etc... in the past, have a chapter on the `First Heaven Sequence' and `Later Heaven Sequence.'.
On how, the two Trigrams (Ba Gua symbols) came about.
The famous Chinese - Confucious had said that if he had lived another 50 years, he would have devoted his time to "try and understand the I-Ching".
Thus, it would not be fair for anyone to `speak their mind' for or against the various methods on the use of the Ba Gua symbols.
It would be fairer to look at two opposing camps without `jumping to personal conclusions'
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
P.S. Appreciate, if you do not `quote' what I had mentioned here to other forums or to the owner of the website without my express permission.
In my opinion, there are lots of FS practitioners "who do not like to hear what they do not like to hear". And create lots of `bad energies' bad mouthing others...

Dear Vijay,
In my opinion, there are many other factors that can influence the sale of your house.
Overall, the main factors are:
1. Location, location, location.
2. Selling price & market conditions.
3. Luck factor - however, there are said to be many forms of luck. Chinese divinity uses Pillars of Destiny (map out Heaven's luck) and try to increase this.
4. For Feng Shui, if there are salient or good points of the house under Feng Shui; one may try to `sell' this as value added - provided the buyer can be convinced about Feng Shui and good points about it. Sometimes, if the house is not so good, this can however backfire.
5. For a new good house, you can try out the Good House report at www.geomancy-online.com.
