Dear Master Cecil,

I know that there are quite a few Chinese who change their children's birth year to make their children seem a year younger (so that they appear very accomplished/mature for their age). If someone who has been using a false date of birth on ID documents (hukou, driver's license, etc) wants to calculate their fengshui, is it sufficient to use their real birthday, or does the fake one have to be taken into account somehow? Can it be safely ignored?

Thank you!

1. Yes, you can definitely ignore fake birthdates.

2. In fact, the "truth" or real birth date is critical!

3. For example, often we get clients that have a family member that told us that they can remember exactly their lunar birth-day. And this date is properly converted back to the western date.

4. In the past, many people were born in remote areas and often, there is a time lag between their actual day of birth and the day their family member say; went to a police post to make a police report. Thus their actual birthday is 7 July 1930. But their birth certificate shows 17 July 1930. But their parents had recorded somewhere or still remember that their "child" was born on 7 July 1930.

5. In this example, we should use 7 July 1930. And totally ignore 17 July 1930!
