2. For the Chinese, it is considered inauspicious to hang a row of three-pendant lights in a straight line.

3. This is especially so, if it can be seen immediately when one come into a home.

4. For example, often may condos have a short entrance and the dining table is in full view of it. Here, many Chinese avoid hanging a string of three-pendant lights.

5. Why is this so? The three-pendant light is symbolic of three joss-stickers that we (Chinese) pray - or give respect to the dead at a Chinese wake (funeral parlour).

6. No worries, if we do have a row of three-straight pendant lights; then, we can follow the examples under attachments:

6.1. Here, we just either:-

6.1.1. Shorten slightly the wires holding the middle pendant light: refer to cascading-lights.jpg

or

6.1.2. Stagger the wires of each of the three pendant lights: refer to cascading-lights1.jpg

6.2. In this way, we don't need to totally replace an existing three pendant lights.

1. Frankly, the above resource meant to show the symbolic relation of three lights in a straight row representing "three joss-sticks" praying to the dead. That's all.

2. Thus, there is really no symbolism associated with two, one or even five lights.

3. Of course, four pendant lights again has more to do with the Cantonese association of 4 with death.

4. If one wants to go ahead. 

5. Common sense:

5.1. Nowadays led bulbs are light weight. 
5.2. Distance between the 2 pendant lights
5.3. Glass material or abstract plastic

5.4. Based on common sense, if a home is windy and if the pendant lights are close to each other + light weight.. hope not that they become an unusual "wind-chime" in the wrong sense of it. LOL

Can I install these lights at my kitchen?

 

 

Hi, I know this is an old thread but I can't find anywhere whether a light fixture with 3 bulbs applies to this? I am trying to find a light for my kitchen and the spotlights often only come in 3 bulbs - see pic. Is this OK? Or alternatively there are ceiling tracks with 4 bulbs, but 4 is not good luck in Chinese culture. Both spotlights can be pointed in different directions. Please could you let me know if either of these are OK? Thank you.

The three spot lights are acceptable.

As for the four lights, this is subjective. Given that some Chinese felt that four (4) is considered inauspicious. But not all are too concerned with this.

P.S. We now know why you want to place spot-lights in your home. 
It's because you want the lights to shine onto many expensive artworks that you own.

I was hoping the 3 spotlight would be ok. My mum was from HK so the number 4 was always inauspicious to us. I never knew the straight row of hanging 3 pendants was inauspicious too. She told me once something about the number of bulbs, but I can't remember anymore. So thank you!

Traditionally three joss-sticks  is to pray to the dead. Or if one visits a Chinese wake, often three joss sticks are lighted up and given to the visitor to pay their respects.

Thus three lights in a straight row to dome symbolises this concern.

Okay for some  could resemble FIVE (5) birds of a feather - flock together! If so, no issue. Else.... 

This is subjective. 

Under symbolism in Feng Shui, it is best to avoid so many pointed "arrows". 

Thus, I believe, there will be many who may find this design uncomfortable to look at. [Thus inauspicious looking shape.]

Of course, there will be some who find no issue - suspect: perhaps the minority, here. Therefore, as I mentioned subjective topic. 

Maybe.. only some dentist would love this design? LOL
