Sir,
Is an empty vase in the living room bad feng shui. Does it hamper the flow of qi in any way.
We have a big black empty vase in the living room for many years.?

1. This reminds me of the time around 1997 or 1998.
2. This was where I could recall, many western sites that had some knowledge called Feng Shui : Fung Sway etc...
3. And many of the sites, had not much resources thus, their largest understanding of Feng Shui was of some kind of thing called "clear space".
4. Thus, I could remember, Feng Shui was strongly advocated as "clear space".
5. In a way, if an item is not in use (empty) no harm clearing it "away".
6. In Feng Shui, even a pile of unwanted newspapers, at the wrong location, could affect the Fung Sway... to coin the 1997-9 term.
7. Besides this, in the past, there were known "hauntings" ... (but of course, should not be in your case).
