Hello!

Just wanted your advise on the staircase we will have for our 3-storey home. The current plan has a U-shaped staircase with 10 steps - landing - 10steps (total of 20) to get to the second floor. From the second floor landing it's another set of 10 steps - landing - 10 steps to get to the third floor.

Do we add 2 steps to make it 11+11 = 22?

Do we count all the way to the top which will make it 44 steps total?

Please help!

In general:

1. From the 1st step on the ground floor to the 2nd storey landing should be totalled inclusive of the 2nd storey landing.

2. At the 2nd storey landing: when one step on the first step to the 3rd storey; this is counted as 1 step; inclusive of any landing and when one reach the 3rd storey landing again, this total should be counted together for the 2nd storey etc...

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly! Just one more question, does the width of the middle landing matter? If it is wide that you might need more than one step within the same level to get to the next step will that count as 2 steps? Or do we just count the vertical steps/levels?

In the attached photo, do we count this as 14 steps?

Thank you again!!

These are some considerations

1. It should be 14 steps.

2. In Feng Shui; it is always good to have a turn or landing at a staircase.

2.1. Some geomancers explain that it is to allow good qi to meander or flow from the ground floor to the upper floor and vice versa.

3. Another side of it has more to do with common sense:

3.1. This is because, touch-wood! If someone were to trip and fall on the upper stairs, often they will land onto the landing then to fall all the way down the entire stairs sometimes to the bottom steps.

3.2. A landing serves as a temporary resting area for some elderly before they further negotiate further up the staircase.

3.2.1. Therefore, it makes sense or ok to have a wider landing.

  • 2 years later...

Hi. My house in under construction. Right now I have a staircase with 23 steps including midway landing. The material for staircase will be different than the material for 1st floor corridor where the staircase ends. (Wood n kotastone respectively. ) Since we also count the 1st floor landing in total number of steps, will using different materials mean I need to exclude it from 23 count? N treat it as 1 separate step? The staircase is inside the house in open courtyard.

I can still modify the staircase count n material.

Under symbolism, can consider different materials.

For some who need an extra step may consider an extra half-a-step at the landing. But do so at one’s own risk. In case of a trip or fall.
