Kandang Kerbau Market History. Today it is renamed Tekka Market

Tekka Market, also known as Kandang Kerbau Market, was built in 1915 and became a well-known marketplace for fresh cut meat. The name, Kandang Kerbau, made reference to the surrounding cattle trade and means "buffalo enclosure" in Malay. The Chinese called it tek kah because of the wild bamboo found in the area. The original market was located across Serangoon Road, opposite the present site. Tekka Market was popular amongst all communities and known as the "people's market". It gained a reputation for its varied and reasonably priced fresh vegetables, meat and seafood.
During the redevelopment of ".e Serangoon area in the early 1980s, the market was demolished and most stalholders were relocated to the present site, which was renamed as Zhujiao Market, a Chinese transliteration of "Tekka". In 2000, the market was renamed Tekka Centre to better reflect the history of the place after public feedback that Zhujiao bore little resemblance to its former name.

In the past, many Singaporeans were also born at the nearby Kandang Kerbau Hospital. TODAY, it is the HQ of LTA.

Foo Chow Methodist Church & it’s history
Location: Race Course Road

+++

Thereafter, the congregation relocated to the Anglo-Chinese School along Coleman Street and again to the Tamil Methodist Church at Short Street, before ending up at a gospel hall along Queen Street in the earty 1930s, where they were taught to read and sing. By 1936, the pressing need for a proper church of their own led Reverend Dr Chen Su Lan, a lay preacher, and other church members to raise the funds to purchase a house along Race Course Road for use as a church. When works were completed in 1938, an architecturally unique building was added to the district, featuring columns designed in the classical style with high vents and round windows. The church was damaged during World War II when a shell exploded on the north-western corner of the building. In 1947, during the repairs to the church, its front was completely rebuilt. In 1950, the back of the church was rebuilt to match its front, in 1994, the church extended its premises by building a link to an adjoining three-storey block, which it acquired in 1987 to start its Christian Education Centre. Today the church runs a kindergarten, as wel as various social welfare programmes.
