This was very popular in the early years of the internet.

Here, someone gives an Award to you. 

Actually what he/she wants to do is to create many links to their website based on thousands of topics.

The more links, the more instant “recognition” these sites get.

Unfortunately in the past, many such links get broken. As no one really bothers to maintain these links.

Even today, often give another five years many of these links have error codes. Especially if the pages are no longer available.
