The town name “Bedok” has been around for over 400 years. The name likely came from the Malay word "Bedoh", which refers to a wooden drum used by the mosque to signal prayer times for the Muslim community.

Kampong Bedok (or "Bedok Corner") used to be composed of two kampong settlements, separated by Bedok Road. The street names in the area today reflect the past community uses for them. For example, Jalan Kathi means “solemniser of marriages” and Jalan Greja means “church”.
