Dear Cecil,
If plants are put in a sector to reduce the effects of bad earth, what about the soil in the pots? Will it increase the effect of the bad earth?
Thank you

Dear Anom,
1. For a novice, this may be big worry or concern. As most of us will quite rightly worry about pots or planters with soil.
2. However, if we properly consider the Five Elements concept - Destructive cycle:-
http://www.geomancy.net/resources/theories/fs-5element.htm
2.1 One will notice that in the destructive cycle, plants/trees (wood element) destroys or crushes earth element.
2.2 Here, we can imagine, the roots of the plants penetrating the soil.
Thus this two auspicious cycle of wood -> destroying earth is good.
2.3 Many Feng Shui practitioners will also tell you that even artificial plants are acceptable used. This is OK.
2.4 In Flying Star Feng Shui, besides metal element -- the next most popular cures is the use of plants.
2.5 While water element if properly used is instead -- an enhancement. In particular, if it is near or at locations with Flying Star metal elements.
*JOKE* It is not to say that we can easily use metal detectors -- hey presto.. metal found ... and water can be used. In fact all modern metals have re-infocred steel or metal support! And the literal meaning should be confined to Flying Star `metal' detection.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
