Dear Matilde,
Attached please find a common "new home blessing ceremony". But it is based on several Chinese customs. And, please note that quite alot of items mentioned are specific to the Chinese community.
However, symbolism plays an important part in our (Chinese) culture.
The most simpliest forms of `blessings' has to do with showering "wealth" into our homes.
For example, simple situations could include:
1. For the Chinese sprinkle (raw) rice all around the home. Here, it is like showering wealth into the home.
2. Some Chinese sprinkle (raw) green beans also. This also symbolise sowing seeds into the home e.g. having children. Where the green beans: green symbolise east or growth and seeds symbolise growth.
3. Tea leaves. Some Chinese also sprinkle tea leaves into the home.
4. If you look into the .doc file attachment, one can find other items like `pineapple'.
5. For hokkiens (Chinese dialect group); Pineapple in hokkien sounds like " Prosperity ". And throwing (rolling) in a pineapple into the home symbolises prosperity.
6. If one is a Catholic, we often invite a priest to sprinkle holy water.
7. For Christians, feel free to invite your pastor over.
As I mentioned above, some of the items found in the .doc file may sound foreign or cannot be obtained in your area - unless you live close-by to a Chinese community or Chinatown.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
