I want to put a gate across my front walk. The walk is straight, about 15 feet long to a wide 6 step staircase, onto a large porch. The house sits somewhat close to a street with a mall in the center. A short street deadends just to the south of the side of the house. The house is a large Victorian with 6 apartments.

What finials should I use in the iron gate to protect and yet not block good 'stuff' from entering?

Thanks.

Dear Mary,

Frankly, there is no major issue in the installation of finials other than that it / or a wall be built so high that it looks more like a prison.

Overall, if your aim is for privacy, the common overlapping wooden / often maintenance free wooden fence is acceptable either in wood tone colours or white.

Warmest Regards,
Cecil
