hello well unfortunately i am just renting this house and the owner refuse to have any renovations. so i can't put any items that might counteract the 'death step'? a friend of mine told me to put a rug at the base of the stairs. i do not know if there is any truth to this though...

Frankly, there is no harm in placing a rug. Perhaps, this is more like taking a "sugar-coated" pill.
