Regarding hanging a gourd between the toilet and the master bedroom, can you elabotate the gourd should be opened or closed at the top since they are sold hollowed out with the top as a stopper.

Frankly, it has more to do with symbolism than to find a gourd that is opened or closed. If it is placed in a toilet environment i.e. lots of moisture, then, ideally the material in which it is made of should be able to "withstand" such an enviroment. Whether it has an open "mouth" or closed one should not be a major issue, here.
