1. This layout is quite common. Usually, many owners erect a gypsum partition and take the opportunity to place their company logo and (for a business, a reception counter) and for e.g. retail outlet some window displays over this area.

2. As the picture shows that the staircase is quite a distance away from the main door, have such a "screen" as mentioned above, will be fine. Thus if one cannot see it, it no longer becomes a threat.
