  1. A Malay fishing village
  2. In the past, it was known as the main gate to the government house (today it is called Istana). Today, you can still see the same gate: entrance to the Istana guarded by several policemen carrying sub-machine guns along the orchard road / side.
  3. A rubber plantation in Singapore in the 1930's. Rubber tapper at work
  4. Singapore used to have a zinc mine in the 1920's to 1930's.
  5. Many years ago, drinking water was brought via bullock carts. Chinatown is also named after "buffalo carting water".... Photos are around the 1910's to 1930's. Did you notice that they come in pairs?
  6. In the past, it is common for HDB flats to install some sort of a shade: be it a concrete shade or such panels. Thus, in the past, whenever one sees such panels protruding from a block of flats; this often implies that such stacks are facing the afternoon sun. Nowadays especially new flats built from 2010 onwards don't seem to have such "refinements" anymore.
  7. Nowadays, few go for such designs. But, the photos shows : 1. The partition panel uses traditional motifs. 2. Although some don't like the motifs e.g. circle enveloping a hexagram; these are still acceptable "safe" motifs or designs or patterns in a home
  8. One of the photos showing an offering of 5 Vitagen /Yakult drinks; apparently to the 'five spirits' : North, South, East, West and Center ghosts or spirits.
  9. Metal element is represented by circles. And water by waves.
  10. Can't image... contrast this with today's Lavender Street. The photo does not even look like a STREET...
  11. At a first glance, one may think that this is the killing fields! A field laced with so many skulls. But erh.. look carefully.... In the 1930's coconut plantation. See how the actual coconut (the fruit or nut) is placed onto the ground to grow each tree?

  17. Singapore in the 1900's. Just look at the photo. So peaceful and serene during those period. Wait till we have 6.9million citizens.
