Dear Anon, Most likely, your friend or friend's family don't have any elderly in need of aid such as wheelchair bound or walking stick! In addition, some elderly or even those who may have some illness such as diabetes that may need to go toilet often. Tell them to "enjoy" walking up and down the home. In addition, for us Chinese, we do cook alot : lots of wet ingredients. Tell it to us, to first bring up our marketing items.. hopefully prawns don't leak it's contents on the walkway etc... Later, need to dispose of it. Don't get me wrong, I like the "idea". But. as especially for the Chinese, many of us live with our parents, especially to look after them. Not to "torture" them! Thus, perhaps, for some cultures, where no elderly stays with them (or even babies that one day will crawl - between 1, 2 to 3 years old). From another point of view, it is good ifone does not intend to have the elderly interect in the living room.They will be much confined to their four walls!Is this good? Let's imagine! In general, based on my quick look at your layout plan:- As qi comes into your home from either North or South, unfortunately, under current Period 8, this North sector or the back of your home is influenced by :- MS #7 with WS #7 and Base = #3 In general, Flying star is based on qi flow and unfortunately, there are double #7 which under this current period is "theft-loss of wealth" sector influenced by bad #3 = career / romance / issues 4. Thus, to "plug this leak" coming from the back, try to use constant metal e.g 6 hollow rod windchime at the back yard of the home. This constant metal will help to neutralise the bad double #7 with bad #3. 4. Usually even with a Period 7, home, one can still benefit with water position at SW sector (which is the indirect -wealth luck - water wealth location) But have to control "roving eyes" issue, here. 5. Even if you have the stove moved away from the NW = Fire at heaven's gate, try to check that under this Sector in particular avoid placing items such as conventional ovens or toasters at this sector. Dear Keith, In my opinion, it "the bedroom above a garage" may not necessarily be the main cause of the problem. The rationale is that not looking at other diagnostic tools such asthe use of Flying Star Feng Shui etc... there are existing owners who do have a bedroom or even a master bedroom above a garage. Usually, the main reason why it is considered inauspicious has to do more with "Commonsense Approach" to Feng Shui. For example, the main rationale, in addition to what you had mentioned, some people use another reasoning or both: what you had mentioned and also that in (the unlikely) event that the car at the porch catches fire, and the bedroom is directly above it. Thus, some feel that because of this rationale, it is inauspicious to have a car parked just below our bedroom. (Fire travels upwards). Dear Anon, Frankly, if you DIY one should preferably look at what are the combination of stars in each of the sectors even if the sector has #5:- For example, logically before jumping into conclusions, we need to really find out what is the current 20 Year Flying Star in a specific sector:- E.g. If South sector has #1 with #6 and base #8 . And if #5 fly's in no issue, here. For one, there is #6 = big metal etc... Sensibly just monitor the situation, first. I believe, this forum already has mentioned several types of cures relating to star #5. In terms of colours, try to avoid: BRIGHT YELLOW and if the room has a combination of #5 (earth = bad yellow) fuelled by #9 (fire = red). IF #9 and #5 appears in that sector, then also try to avoid: BRIGHT RED items or colours in that bedroom. P.S. Please - don't post your star numbers, here. This is because, in real life, when we provide professional advise, we have to analyse a home based not only only Shapes and Forms of the home, even where the drainage exits from a home. 2b. To other factors, like what Flying Star Period and even the direction of your home. Thus to give you a simple example, if one is staying in a Period 7, Flying Star; North-West home; the current water wealth star #8 is at the centrepoint of the home. And usually such a home has already "SMALL LUCK". 3. On a self-help basis: Usually, if possible, knowing whether one is an East or West Group can help. 3. Besides this, since the piece of land is from east to west, try to position critical areas such as bedrooms, living rooms or critical walls in any of such rooms within the "afternoon sun" or west. Imagine, working or sleeping in a west room .. especially even after 7pm if the wall of a bedroom faces the afternoon sun. It will literally soak in the heat! And subsequently release from the wall. Thus turning on a fan does not help. Unless one turns on aircon to cool down the place. 4. Often, in general, many people prefer a North-South home because only radiated light comes into the home. And such homes especially if bedrooms, living rooms are properly away from the influence of the morning sun and afternoon sun. 5. Thus for a east-west facing home, if we are not careful, in the morning, direct sunlight may come in and in the afternoon we face the dreaded afternoon sun! 6. For darker skinned persons, morning to afternoon sun although may be a concerned if exposed too much but for fair skinned persons, just imagine, your bedroom window is directly facing say the afternoon sun! For children, if we place their study table against the window, here, sometimes, even if we do use darker curtains, UV or ultra-violet light would still shine in! Dear Anon, In a real world situation, lets be practical: in a human situation, there are two main parties involved: the Feng Shui practitioner and their clients. Thus, there will always be different situations: where a Feng Shui practitioner may either practise Feng Shui WITHOUT religion especially if the practitioner is a free-thinker or in the west, some practitioners some how or other may be e.g. a born Catholic or a taoist etc... Even if the practitioner is non "religious" but like you had mentioned, the client has a religion, a good Feng Shui practitioner has to provide advise to both non and religious clients. Especially if the clients "insists" or have an altar. Thus, we really live in a real world situation. If say the practitioner perhaps is non-religious or even if he is religious but does not mix the too, somehow.. the practitioner cannot simply tell the client : Hey! stop! No altar please! Does not make sense, here. The practitioner "earns his" pay from the client and not vice-versa! Logically, a "mountain" in a home is usually a "solid" wall or some good backing. So sensibly, thus the best locations for an altar is at a "mountain" location! and usually this mountain position may face a "water" position i.e. clear space - not literally actual water! Therefore, thru logic, especially for many older layouts of the HDB apartment units, many of the centrepoint is usually: 1. close to the centrepoint of the home; 2. this location directly faces the living room window And this location is one of the "cleanest" location in a small HDB apartment. Where it is taboo to place the altar with it's back to a toilet andalso it is not good to face the bedrooms. Dear Leigh, In my opinion, many traditional practitioners of Feng Shui strongly believe that we should not reverse the readings for the southern hemisphere. I am not going to comment on the use of the "fixed template" or the placement of a "fixed" bagua onto a layout plan as this is a modern invention. And not widely practised by Traditional School(s) of Feng Shui. The example of water draining out of the sink the opposite site which differs clockwise or anti-clockwise between the North and South hemispere is often used by those who reverse the readings. There are lots of arguments against this such as the Five Elements Concept: Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - Earth certainly does not have impact whether one is in the North or South hemisphere. Many other concepts in Feng Shui also are affected by this North-South .. thing. Dear Michelle, In my opinion, this concern of mirror facing our bed is very interesting as there are two different view points, here: 1. It started with some Feng Shui books, commenting that when we sleep, these books mentioned that "our spirit" will float and if our bed is facing the mirror or a tv screen that has highly reflective glass.. our spirit will get a shock when it sees it's own image! Perhaps, the spirit froze to death? 2. Another side of the argument is that what happens if - indeed when we sleep, our spirit really float and sees itself in a mirror... Perhaps, it is a blessing in disguise as now this spirit, can personally look at his/her appearance to check whether he/she is good enough to wander off! ie. nicely combed hair etc... 3. We are on this earth for such a short period of our life! So, having TV set facing us is to many of us advantages, in that we have our personal space, comfortably seated in our bed viewing wonderful pictures on our TV set! 4. " For info:- Grand Duke this year is North, 0 Degree. - Avoid sitting facing the grand duke or disturbing him by having renovations. Location in Conflict is South. - Avoid having renovations done opposite the location in conflict. From the above, the good news is that South happens to have bad stars that if we do not do renovations, there.. no issue. Thus, it is still perfectly fine to face South. Try not to confuse South = location of conflict with Grand Duke. Thus as mentioned, above, South : just happens to be the conflict location, this year and avoid renovations at that spot is key to the issue. Since Grand Duke is at zero degrees north this year; especially for those sitting in a meeting room or doing sales; if possible try not to face North directly (again if possible). In an office environment; yes, there is distinction between using Kua (Gua) or the Eight House Theory vs Flying star (Compass relating ot the birth-chart of a location) Feng Shui - in short. 1. We should look at Kua numbers -- in short we should try to maximize our sitting position by : sitting facing our "Prosperity" sector. 2. In the following example, a person who has Kua type 7 - Dui:- In his4 Good and 4 Bad Directions North-West (Metal) Prosperity North (Water) Disaster North-East (Earth) Longevity West (Metal) Excellent Sample Gua analysis East (Wood) Death South-West (Earth) Health South (Fire) Spook South-East (Wood) Irritation HisBEST sleeping position Between: North-East (22.5 to 67.4) = Longevity South-West (202.5 to 247.4) = Health HisBEST Working position Between: North-West (292.5 to 337.4) = Prosperity West (247.5 to 292.4) = Excellent 3. In the above example, if the person is doing business, try to position his work station or sit facing (if possible): 1st choice: North-West (292.5 to 337.4 degrees) which is his Prosperity sector. Dear Tomas, In general, when we first open door; symbolically we want to "deposit" wealth into the new home or apartment. Start of renovations is often done. Here, the most simple procedure is to bring a hammer or a screw driver if we do not have the hammer and before starting renovations, usually say in mandarin " To all the gods, apologies, as I or we are starting renovations on ..... such a such a date." Afterwards, just knock three times on the floor or some on the wall. Usually Hokkiens practice more "simple procedures". Many Cantonese on the other hand, have the concept of 5-ghosts or spirits i.e. spirit or god of North, South, East, West and Central =5 ghosts (not bad ones but they are"ghosts" = gods). Thus, someCantonese may wantto knock all4 corners: North, South , East and West and on thecentrepointpoint floor = centre and place 5 types of fruits (or pray with them). As there is the Hokkiens, there are the Cantonese, there are the Teochews, Hakka etc.. That is why there are somany differingprocedures. For example, for the 1st time open door,throwing in pineapple usually by the Hokkiens/ Teochews aspineapple sound like "ONG LYE" or prosperity come... Therefore,frankly there is no right or wrong procedures! If we analyse carefully, as mentioned earlier.. open door = usually try to deposit some wealth be it throw a pineapple etc... In this modern day, many couples new purchased their home and really have no time to do all the procedures! The best that they may do most of thetime are:- 1. Open door procedure 2. Start of renovations (sometimes, delegated to contractors) 3. Dear Anon, Frankly, the hardest room to move-if any is a bathroom because of it's fixtures/sewerage piping etc... Thus, many of us have to "live" with it. In general, there are two "COMMONSENSE" approach in the name of Feng Shui: 1. If our bathroom door is fronting the stairs.. the best alternative of not seeing the toilet while moving up and down is simply to close the door. 2. Whenever we flush to toilet, especially the toilet bowl, the water coming from the toilet bowl area usually "flys" out. This is why we often here that toilet is not clean or dirty. Ordinarily, many of us are healthy individuals and a bit "dirt" does not kill us! For example, in a toilet, anywhere, we place our toothbrush, and when we flush out toilet bowl, some germs would be deposited on it. Again, many of us are healthy human beings and thus a litte germ is acceptable! The "scary" thing was one day.. while driving this "joker" advertise to buy his "disinfection" tablet to disinfect our toothbrush! Here, next time for Singaporean say going to places like Thailand or Malaysia and patronise road side vendors may not be say tolerant to unclean food etc... no immunity... Dear Anon, The common "cure" is to place a red circular "dot" (e.g. using a permanent marker, or a circular red sticker the size of a hole-pucher hole or the use ofa "girls" reddish nail varnish. Just simply place the "dot" on the key hole area or just above the keyhole of the doorknob. Place the same "dot" exactly on the same area of the other door. Dear Anon, 1. Firstly, is there any other better alternatives then to place bamboo strips? For example, if it is a window, so long as you have closed the window or it is part of the balcony the balcony glass is on the side facing the main door such that qi cannot flow out directly. 2. If the above alternative is used, then no need to consider bamboo strips. 3. If you still have to use bamboo strips, then the "test" is so long as we humans can "see thru" the bamboo strips to our main door; then equally, it is fine to place it at the location mentioned. 4. As for the frosted glass so long as it is not reflective (like a mirror) it would be acceptable especially if it is sandblasted or "matt finish". Dear Anon, 1. I am unable to advise you based on " sector " unconventional non-traditional Feng Shui. 2. This type of unconventional " FS " is a modern invention. 3. It has no merits in Traditional FS and is only popular in US. Perhaps, at best it provides `false' hope. 4. This type of " sector " thing; can be highly commercialised and one may end up spending money lining the pocket of the unsuspecting " FS practitioner " and shops that benefit by selling a person items. 5. Dear Anon, Yes, some Feng Shui books often indicate that when we cook, we should be able to see who is coming into the kitchen. This is a commonsense approach: 1. Not often, we will leave the entrance door open. But, sometimes, when we cook, the noise may drown e.g. a bell or someone calling us at the main entrance. Especially so if it is any of our loved ones ... especially the very young children who may have just came back from school. 2. Should someone have left the entrance door open, we may see "an intruder" come in ..eg towards us.. (Most unlikely.. but this is what some of the book(s) say... Frankly, most of the time Para 1 and 2 does not happen. As often, we roughly know when our child is coming back; and we may infact.. be waiting, instead at the front door. Ideally, when we stand at the main entrance door, we should try to avoid seeing the stove directly. As it is akin to symbollically "getting"burned when we,just stepped into the home. Under Eight House theory, one should not be too worried about such issues. If the back area is the best location for air-con then just do it. 3. More importantly, the Eight House theory is more about which direction is more suitable etc.. Rather than if we place such a such an item at our Excellent or Prosperity sector... 4. For a fish tank either go by personal feel or if you do know how to draw a flying star chart then; for example; one can benefit from water feature in a Water Star #8 (current prosperity - Overall career luck area) or Water Star #1 (coming prosperity) sector. Dear Anon, For the Chinese, in particular, when one is pregnant, one should not move one's bed. This is a taboo. More importantly, don't move your current bed especially before giving birth. Therefore, if possible, try to avoid moving any furniture (if any) inside your bedroom (master bedroom). As for other rooms or hallway furniture, for practical aspects, you should not participate in moving the furnitures. If possible, should there be a need for furniture to be moved at all, for yourself, try not to be around when they (it) the furniture are moved. We live in a practical world, and as mentioned earlier, don't touch your bedroom furniture... is good enough.
